Test Results and Assessment:

Q Motor Oil 5•30

Whereas the label on this product states "5•30” in large print (which could be interpreted by a consumer as meaning it’s an SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade), the label also states in smaller print “Viscosity Range 5 To 30*.”  This terminology is not consistent with any industry definitions for SAE viscosity grades. Further, the Low-Temperature Cranking Viscosity is 20% higher than the maximum viscosity specification for a 5W-30 SAE grade.

In addition, although the label on this product does not claim it meets any API Service Category (or any other specification for that matter), the test results on this sample indicates the product lacks any meaningful level of additives to protect engines from wear, sludge, and corrosion. Further, the metal analysis results indicate the product may be contaminated with used oil and abrasive material. For these reasons, the product is NOT suitable for use in virtually all automobile engines currently on the road.

Use of this product in virtually all automobile engines will likely cause harm to the engine. Similarly, although the back label on the product states “Suitable for Moderate Diesel Engines,” use of this product in virtually all diesel engines currently on the road will likely cause harm to the engine.

Note1: Although laboratory tests alone cannot be used to establish if engine oil meets an API Service Category, they can be used to determine if it doesn't. Note2: The specification for cold cranking viscosity includes only a maximum value; the minimum value shown in the “standard” area of the chart is truncated for illustrative purposes.
