PETROLEUM QUALITY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA TEST PROGRAM

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) is an independent resource for information and insights on the quality of lubricants in the marketplace. Our mission is to serve the consumer of lubricants by randomly sampling and independently testing lubricants taken from the field. Test results are posted along with the brand names on the PQIA website. This webpage provides an analysis on the brand detailed below.

The following are the test results for the sample examined.

Test Results and Assessment:

ADVISORY: The results of the tests conducted on this sample meet the SAE J300 specifications for the SAE Viscosity Grade listed on the product label, and are consistent with the API SJ Service Category. It should be noted, however, that API SJ motor oils are intended for use in vehicles built prior to 2002. Although not stated on the labels, consumers should be aware of its limited use. Further, whereas the labels state, "For use where an SJ motor oil is recommended," and “is compatible with API approved engine oils,” the labels do not claim this product actually meets any API Service Categories.

The high level of silicon in this sample is unusual and may indicate contamination with abrasive material.

Note: Although laboratory tests alone cannot be used to establish if engine oil meets an API Service Category, they can be used to determine if it doesn't.

  1. Standards, shown in yellow are established by API, SAE and others.
  2. Test Method for metal analysis is ASTM D5185.
  3. The viscosity @-30ºC mPa s (cP) (ASTM D5293), also known as the Cold Crank Simulator (CCS) results are higher than SAE J300 specification of a maximum of 6,600 for a 5W-20. The CCS does, however, fall within the API "Expanded Range" of 7,082, which takes into account test reproducibility.
